HOW TO HELP

Nature School - Sunshine Coast Homeschooling Group - November 2006

During the week of November 6, 2006, a group of homeschooling children and their parents spent the week at the Iris Griffith Centre to participate in the Lagoon Society's Nature School Program. Together with Nature School Coordinator Lee-Ann Ennis and Teacher Liaison Gillian Kydd, the parents planned the week's activities to match the interests and curriculum needs of their children, and to expand upon subjects they had been exploring at home.

The week at Nature School was filled with many adventures. Students enjoyed forest walks and lengthy periods of time observing nature and sketching and writing in their journals. Local artists June Malaka and Solveigh Harrison introduced the students to watercolour painting and sketching. Georgia Ohm shared her knowledge of animal bones and animal adaptations, and forester Tony Richmond taught about local trees and shrubs, and the interdependence of living creatures. Local photographer and conservationist Rick O'Neill shared photos and stories about life in Sunshine Coast forests and described how to make simple habitats for amphibians. Scott Ennis led a hike to the shores of Ruby Lake where the children put up a poster they had made about sockeye salmon.

Park Ranger Dylan Eyeres came equipped with his own bag of tricks, including elk and deer antlers and a cougar pelt, and entertained the kids with sample male and female elk mating calls. Canada World Youth Volunteers Dai Cooper and Mags Eksteen accompanied the children on hikes to the wetland, and Mags gave a presentation about life in her homeland of Namibia. Biologist David Stiles shared a slide show the weird and wonderful world of bats and led the children through a series of comparisons between the bat and a fellow mammal - the human being.

The Lagoon Society would like to express its deep gratitude for the generous contributions of all of community volunteers and parents that helped make this week at Nature School such a wonderful experience for everyone involved.
