Nature School - Davis Bay School - May 2006
During the first week in May, 2006, Joan Wilson's Grade 6/7 class from Davis Bay Elementary School became the third class to participate in the Lagoon Society's innovative new Nature School Program. Mrs. Wilson brought her class to the Iris Griffith Interpretive Centre in the Ruby Lake Lagoon Nature Reserve every day for the entire week. During their week at Nature School, the students participated in a variety of activities. They went on nature hikes, made solar stills, and created plans for green schools. They undertook a pond study, built terraria, and took time to observe nature and record thoughts and observations in their journals. They also worked to clear a trail in the Nature Reserve, which they named "Dead Man's Trail"!
Prior to coming to Nature School, Mrs. Wilson worked with Nature School Coordinator, Georgia Ohm, to develop the week's activities to extend the student's classroom studies related to the science curriculum. At Nature School, Mrs. Wilson led many of the activities, including the solar still and terrarium construction. She was assisted by Georgia Ohm, together with Teacher Liaison, Dr. Gillian Kydd, Programme Assistant, Kari Evelyn, and many enthusiastic parents and class volunteers.
