John Clarke Nature Cards ($4/card)
John Clarke (Feb 1945 - Jan 2003)
The Coastal Mountains of BC were John’s home - for over 40 years he wandered through them. He made more than 600 first ascents throughout British Columbia’s Coast Mountains, probably coming to know them more intimately than any other human being. He was the co-founder of the Vancouver Witness Project that introduces people to the natural world and Squamish Nation traditions. In 1999, John received the BC Minister’s Award for Environmental Education, in 2001, the Frank Sandford Award of the VNHS for his outstanding community work, and in 2002, he was made a member of the Order of Canada. John had a charisma and outgoing friendliness that attracted everyone he met, and that, combined with his photographic skills and Irish wit enabled him to show those wild places to thousands of people in his public and school presentations. Through the wilderness education program, he introduced more than 35,000 children to the natural places of this province.

May you be as strong as the oak,

Wood Duck Cards ($4/card)

Wood Duck (Aix sponsa) - Photo by Keith Thirkell
Cards are blank inside. On the back:
The wood duck is considered by many bird watchers to be North America's most colourful waterfowl species. Its scientific name, Aix sponsa, translates into "waterbird in bridal dress." Writings from the early 19th century indicate that wood ducks were in abundant supply... By the late 1880s, unregulated hunting and destruction of cavity tree nesting sites and wetland habitat had caused the wood duck population to decline to alarmingly low levels. By the begining of the 20th century, wood ducks had virtually disappeared from much of their former range. Now due to conservation efforts, like those of our Society, the wood duck has made a dramatic comeback...
