The Iris Griffith Complex
The Iris Griffith Field Studies and Interpretive Centre Complex will be a state of the art educational facility designed to help all ages explore and appreciate the natural wonders of British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast. Named in honour of late local naturalist Iris Griffith, the Complex will include the recently opened Interpretive Centre building, a Field Studies Centre building, and an Astronomy Observatory.
Outside, an observation tower, viewing platforms, a tree canopy walkway, bird hides, and boardwalks in a wetland restoration area will encourage outdoor exploration with a minimum of impact on the environment and wildlife.
The Complex buildings will be state-of-the-art green buildings, designed to have minimal impact on the surrounding environment. They will be built using high-tech/low-maintenance designs incorporating modern materials and technology and re-useable energy sources. The buildings will feature the latest developments in environmentally friendly building technology, including such features as reed bed septic systems, thermal water storage control, green roof technology, and solar and wind power sources.
The Complex will be home to a rich diversity of community programs, including courses for adult professionals and hobbyists, and a unique Nature School Program for school-aged children. Many programs are already underway at the Iris Griffith Interpretive Centre. Please visit our Events Calendar page for more information.
