Saturday May 24th Noon - BioBlitz Kick Off with a Gummy Critter Hunt for the Kids : Meet at the Iris Griffith Interpretive Centre for a few words from Lagoon Society Chair, Dr. Michael Jackson, who will kick off the first ever Sunshine Coast BioBlitz. Following, kids of all ages will get a chance to start the weekend off with their very own hunt for edible gummy worms and frogs! 12:30pm - Pond Netting and Observations for Kids of All Ages: Meet at the Iris Griffith Interpretive Centre to discover the critters that live within the fresh water world. Led by invertebrate enthusiasts Lee-Ann Ennis and Jordan Rosenfeld, you will get a chance to use nets in the water to collect pond life and to observe it afterwards in tanks. Microscopes will be on site for observing the microscopic world of pond water. Nets and tanks will be available all day for ongoing pond exploration. 1:00pm - Seeing Seaweeds on the Seashore - A 2-part Discovery Tour: Robert DeWreede, a retired faculty member of the Department of Botany at UBC, is a seaweed and algae specialist who invites us on a field trip for an inter-tidal tour. 2:00pm - Amphibians and Reptiles: Presentation and Field Outing. Meet inside the Iris Griffith Centre for a 20 min overview of amphibians and reptiles and their habitat led by local wildlife photographer Rick O’Neill, who has a beautiful collection of photos and a lot of information to share about frogs and salamanders. Following, Rick will lead a field outing to look for amphibian and reptile species to identify and count. 4:00pm - Seeing Seaweeds on the Seashore - A Power Point Presentation Gather in the Iris Griffith Interpretive Centre for a follow up presentation by our seaweed specialist Robert DeWreede. Late Afternoon - Music! BBQ: Join us inside the Iris Griffith Interpretive Centre for some soft violin music by Serena Eades. Join us outside for a sausage and veggie burger BBQ. Early Evening - Early Evening Bird Walk: Gather at the Iris Griffith Interpretive Centre for an early evening bird walk around the Ruby Lake Lagoon Nature Reserve and surrounding area. 7:30pm - Amphibians and Reptiles: Presentation and Field Outing: Meet inside the Iris Griffith Interpretive Centre for a 20 min overview of amphibians and reptiles and their habitat. The presentation will be led by local wildlife photographer Rick O’Neill, who has a beautiful collection of photos and a lot of information to share about frogs and salamanders. Following Rick’s presentation he will lead a field outing to look for amphibian and reptile species to identify and count. Everyone is welcome to join Rick out in the field. 9:30pm - Owl Hooting and Mosquito and Moth Trapping: Take your pick for the last official events of the night. Join us at the Iris Griffith Interpretive Centre to break into groups for mosquito/moth trapping or to experience owl calling activities. We may even get to see some bats! ALL DAY - Children's arts and crafts table. Sunday May 25th 8:00am - Early Bird Walking Tour: Gather at the Iris Griffith Interpretive Centre at 8:00am for birding walk starting at 8:30am around the Ruby Lake Lagoon Nature Reserve and surrounding area. 10:00am - Smolt Migration Talk and Tour: Duane Paul, a Resource Technician from the Sechelt Indian Band, is currently doing a Salmon Smolt Migration Inventory at the Sakinaw Lake Estuary. Join Duane at the estuary where he will demonstrate the enumeration technique used to inventory the migration of new Salmon to their marine habitat and to answer any other questions about Salmon in general. Meet at the Iris Griffith Interpretive Centre at 9:30am to carpool or at the Petro Can Gas Station at Garden Bay Road/Hwy 101 at 9:45am to carpool or meet at the Sakinaw Estuary at 10:00am. (*Please note it is a 25min drive from the Centre to the estuary trail and then another 15min walk to where Duane will be. Trail conditions are unpredictable so please wear appropriate footwear.) 11:00am - Sunday Morning Mosquito and Moth ID: Join us to examine and identify our moths, bugs and mosquitoes with Tim Howay and Michael Jackson - the mosquito men.
Other Specialists Thanks to the many other people who will be on site to share their wealth of knowledge. Over the course of the weekend look for their name tags with their designated specialty!
Also, to help with identifications, and to promote fewer disturbances to nature, please consider a digital camera so that you can easily share what you found with the specialists!
The BioBlitz survey zone includes everything within a 10Km radius of the Iris Griffith Interpretive Centre (15386 Sunshine Coast Highway). Please feel free to bring in your samples, photographs or lists of species identified or collected from anywhere within the BioBlitz zone from noon May 24th to noon May 25th. Send us your species records from within the BioBlitz Survey Zone.
