The Education Committee

Gillian Dr. Gillian Kydd, Education Committee Chair. Gillian is the co-founder of the Open Minds/Campus Calgary Program. This award-winning program allows teachers to move their classrooms to such locations as the Calgary Zoo, Glenbow Museum and Calgary Science Centre. The program allows students to be immersed in a site for a week as catalyst for long-term interdisciplinary study at school. The program has flourished and this year close to 6,000 Calgary students and their teachers will spend a week at one of ten sites. Gillian earned a Ph.D., an M.Ed., an Early Childhood Diploma, and a B.Ed. (with distinction) from the University of Calgary and also holds a B.Sc. (Microbiology) from the University of British Columbia. Her educational portfolio reflects her devotion towards the sciences and her dedication to teaching.
Patricia Dr. Patricia Gallaugher, Education Committee Member. Patricia is Director of the Centre for Coastal Studies and Director of Science Programs in Continuing Studies at Simon Fraser University. She is a fish physiologist who has worked for some years on seeking solutions for sustainable use of coastal and ocean resources in BC and Canada.
Kurt Dr. Kurt Grimm, Education Committee Member. Kurt is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth and Oceans Sciences at UBC and a Sunshine Coast resident (Roberts Creek Cohousing). His work concerns Earth system science, a general theory of Living systems and advancing the process of (personal!) sustainability. Sustainability sciences, ecoliteacy, practical bioregionalism, and transformative experiential education are central elements in Kurt's dream of a sustainability field school based on the Sunshine Coast.
John John Pass, Education Committee Member. John is an instructor at Capilano College in Sechelt where he teaches English and Communications courses. A committed "generalist" as an educator he has a particular interest in cross-genre and inter-disciplinary learning and has served on the College's Instructional Board, The Principal's Advisory Committee, and The Principal's Committee on Life-long Learning. He is best known as a poet with fifteen books published since 1971. He is also a letterpress printer and publisher. He has given readings, workshops and presentations to audiences from pre-school to grad-school levels in roles as various as Visiting Poet at Brigham Young University, a mentor with BC Festival of The Arts and an editor in The Writing Studio at The Banff Centre. John and his wife, writer Theresa Kishkan, have lived for 23 years on 8.5 acres of forest, garden and orchard across the highway from the Ruby Lake Lagoon.
Neil Dr. Neil Meikleham, is an environmental chemist working for a Sunshine Coast based consulting firm that specializes in the development of biological treatment systems, such as constructed wetlands, to remove contaminants from wastewater, soil, and sediments. He is interested in combining natural design, simple living skills, holistic thinking and mind-body awareness into human systems so that they become more environmentally restorative and less destructive.
Heather Heather Reid, is a doctoral student in Adult Education (Transformative Learning) at the University of Toronto (OISE), and holds a Master's degree in Philosophy and Religion. She is particularly concerned with addressing the psychological and spiritual underpinnings of the environmental crisis and healing the relationship of humans to nature through embodied and meditative practices. She has a varied background in education and has written and prepared several feature-length documentaries for CBC Radio on issues pertaining to personal and social transformation.
Michael Dr. Michael Jackson, Chair and Project Director, has a wealth of experience in conservation, wetland ecology, educational instruction, writing and project management as well as sound business acumen. As the managing director of a book business in central London and as a production manager in theatre and televison, he has the ability to work together with large teams of people to achieve a common aim. He is currently a Research Associate with Faculty of Forestry at the University of British Columbia and runs his own wetlands consultancy that specialises in habitat restoration and natural methods of mosquito control.
Tony Tony Greenfield, Birdwatcher, conservationist and naturalist. A well-known bird expert who is familiar to every reader of The Coast Reporter newspaper. Tony is also President of the Sunshine Coast Natural History Society and The Sargeant Bay Society and runs a nature-based touring company.
Brigit Brigit Garrett, Society Director and Education Committee Member. Brigit has been a resident of the Sunshine Coast since 1990, is a qualified massage therapist and a self-motivated small business proprietor. She is a mother of 3 boys and has strong ties and commitment to the Pender Harbour community. For many years she has been a volunteer with the Madeira Park Elementary School.
David David Stiles, Dave is a field biologist who has spent the past decade working on wildlife research and conservation projects. He has worked with a great diversity of animals including amphibians, birds, bats, insects, and small and medium sized mammals. Dave is skilled at organizing, coordinating and motivating large teams of researchers, volunteers and interns.
Lee Lee Ann Ennis, Program Coordinator. Lee Ann is an environmental education specialist. She worked for several years as Members’ and Public Programs Coordinator at the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre where she delivered marine and fresh water programs and ran the ‘Young Biologists’ Club.’ At Telegraph Cove, on Vancouver Island, Lee Ann worked as a Naturalist helping to create the Johnston Strait Killer Whale Interpretive Centre.
